The Science Lab in GHS Buea

The science laboratory is a place where teachers and students conduct experiments (performing test to find out about things).Anybody working in science lab has to follow some basic safety rules. All chemicals no matter how harmless we think they are, probably dangerous for our health.

The science lab is made up of four depths; Biology, chemistry, physics and geology. The science lab opens at 7:30am daily, and due to the practical classes that takes place in the lab, at times the door in the lab closes at 5:30pm. The biology class both LSS and USS takes place every Mondays and Wednesdays for close to three 3hours30min. The chemistry class for both LSS and USS takes place every Fridays and Thursdays from 1:30-3:30pm. The physics practical takes place every Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:40-11:50 and from 11; 50-1:30pm respectively. And finally the geology practical usually takes place every Wednesdays from 9:40-11:50am. The geology department began operating this year.

The materials and equipments for each practical lesson are brought out by the lab attendant one hour before the start of the practical that the lab is usually set for one hour before practical and during this period no student is allowed in the laboratory. During practical students are not allowed to tough anything unless they are asked to do so. The students are expected to put on their lab jackets before they enter the laboratory in addition to this they allowed to enter the lab during practical with their practical books and writing materials. All their bags are kept outside. During practical no student is allowed to sit, and all the stools are put under the table.

After the practical lesson students are expected to tidy up their tables. During this period, the lab attendant move around to check and collect some of the materials. Students are not allowed to eat or drink anything during practical. They are not expected to carry out any experiment without the knowledge of the teacher. Chemicals, materials or equipments are only brought out during practical after which the lab attendant keeps them inside the cupboards. Since most of the practical lessons are in the afternoon, USS students usually come to the science laboratory to read. Students are allowed to read only when the lab attendant or teacher is present. As mentioned above the science lab closes the door after everybody including the teachers has left.
